From Rio de Janeiro, 7-string guitarist Daniel Marques recently won the greatest award in his country, the ‘Brazilian Grammy’ known as the Prêmio da Música Brasileira (2010).
“The Brazilian Award was for my last project called Frevo Diabo Orchestra. I created that band, produced the awarded CD and directed the band, also composing and making arrangements. My new project is like a microcosm of the orchestra.”
Daniel is now releasing his debut solo album, Carnaval de Perneta (2012, Bolacha Label). This CD offers a different view of Brazilian Carnival and Folk music. Featuring all original material, the project showcases Daniel’s compositions, arrangements, production, and leadership. With a jazzy approach, including a variety of percussions and Daniel’s occasional vocalizing, Marques creates his unique sound.
The young guitar player has been gathering enthusiastic reviews performing internationally at guitar, jazz, world music and folk festivals. Sometimes having the honour to share the night with stars such as Miroslav Vitous, Randy Brecker, Richard Galliano, Candy Dulfer, Mingus Dinasty, classical guitarrist John Williams, Paco de Lucia, Incognito... And after being influenced by all of these musicians worldwide he continues to experiment with different formats ranging from Solo to Trio and beyond.
