  1. He studied for a while with Paulinho Nogueira, and produced a really nice solo CD by him, Reflexões (was issued here in the US by Malandro Records). The CD is out of print now (unfortunately).

  4. Kristi, since you like the Bellinati CD so much, you should get the other recordings he's made for GSP (Guitar Solo Publications). They're terrific! (All 6-string classical; no viola caipira, etc.) Claudinha: (haircut).

    Thanks, Claudinha! I don't like buying from iTunes; the DRM and the low bitrate are the reason... I did check amazon.com's MP3 store, but their CD isn't there (yet). And a friend is looking for a copy (actually, one for me, one for them) in Rio right now. I sent the link to their YouTube page and my friend loves their playing. It would probably be easiest to get a copy of their CD in either Campinas or SP, but ... oh well. I guess I have to put them on the list of musicians I plan to hear whenever I have enough $ to go to Brazil myself! It would be great if someone could bring them up here for a tour, because I think people would love this kind of music (and Almir Sater, too!). If only the economy was better... and if the US visa regulations weren't so ridiculous. (Although I do have some hope about the visa stuff, now that Obama is president.)

    Hi everyone - i can't write in Portuguese, and I play percussão, not violão or viola. But I think you will all like this video - I also really like Rafael Rabello, Paulinho Nogueira, Marco Pereira, Dino 7 Cordas, Maurício Carrilho, Pedro Amorim (violão tenor) & all of the guys in Quarteto Maogani. Oh, & João Rabello.

    Thank you for posting that video, Claudinha! I've heard some tracks from Almir Sater's instrumental albums and like his playing a lot. I found this group's videos today and would like to get their CD, if I can find a way to do so.
  9. Randall - yes, I have. I hope to be able to read it in Portuguese someday... My feelings about it are very mixed. it's a little too gossipy for my taste, and Ruy Castro is (IMO) overly prejudiced about certain things (from hating the sound of the berimbau to telling some unflattering anecdotes about Elis Regina). That aside, yeah - it's good. So far, my Brazilian friends have said he's pretty dead-on (those who are old enough to remember the times, that is), and who am I to argue? (Although I know at least one person who knows her music but also thinks *way* too much has been made of JG, from the 50s right up to the present day - am not really sure why she thinks this way, though.) At any rate, I think I need to re-read the book, as it's been several years since I last looked at it and my memory of it isn't very clear, on the whole. Eugenio, thanks for the link! It's been a while since I last checked Daniella's blog and articles; will have to re-read that one. And what you say about Caetano as a producer: I agree completely. Also, your point regarding what JG was doing in the 1950s is a very important one. I can see why people would praise JG for what he did at that time and for a while after. But to say that he is some sort of "guitar god" today - that seems misleading to me, at least. (And I really like his music, too!)
  10. The results down in the main forum are about what I'd expect.... His playing was my 1st exposure to any kind of Brazilian guitar playing, but you know, I've always thought of him more as someone who's playing to accompany himself than anything else. Maybe I'm missing something important about his playing, but... I have never understood why he gets so much praise. The 1st time I saw people talking about what a great guitarist he is (back in the mid-1990s, on an English-language Brazilian music list), i was just amazed. I do think that his playing works perfectly for what he does, but... was his style really so innovative and unusual, back in the 1950s? I would love to see comments from the Brazilians here who can write in English! Edited to add: I don't like the recording of JG that Caetano produced. But I do like the instrumental pieces by JG that are on Paulo Bellinati's new CD (very much, in fact) and have always thought Um Abraço no Bonfá is a lovely piece. It makes me smile whenever I hear it!

  13. I meant that many of her costumes were based on what baianas wear - not that they *are* what baianas wear! I was thinking that I had made that clear in my post, but I guess not - ??? Claudinha, muitissima obrigada for all of the info.!That 1st pença is very beautiful, too. I wonder what some of those charms mean - or maybe I should say "meant" - originally... Did your grandmother ever talk about them?
